A fossil is everything that is evidence of something that lived before us (mostly in rock) for example a stone with the print of a leaf in it. Fossils can be found in very many places, and they are very important to scientists, because fossils are the things they use to date things back to, and to figure out when and where things lived, when ice ages happend, and stuff like that. All this information that they find they put in a table called the Fossil Record, which has all the fossils in order of when they were found. This table is broken down from Eons, to Eras which are then broken into Periods. There are three main eras, which had their own plants and animal that lived there, theses Eras were: Paleozoic- No life in the beginning until towords the end of this era (the are we are in now) Mesozoic- This era contained Reptiles, Dinosaurs, and later contained birds and small mammals Cenozoic-This era contained Mammals, Mamoths, Sabertooth Tigers, and Sloths.
There is also such a thing as trace fossils- stone poo, foot prints ect. this also gives us clues of teh size of an animal, or what they ate.
